Wedding Celebrant FAQs

Everything You Need to Know About Celebrant-Led Weddings

Wedding Celebrant FAQs

Planning a wedding comes with plenty of questions, especially if you're considering a celebrant-led ceremony.

As The Cheshire Celebrant, I work with couples across Cheshire, Manchester, the North West and beyond to create personalised wedding ceremonies that reflect their unique story.

Below you'll find answers to some of the most common questions couples ask when planning their wedding ceremony.

General Wedding Celebrant Questions

What is a wedding celebrant?

A wedding celebrant is a professional who creates and conducts personalised wedding ceremonies. Unlike traditional ceremonies, a celebrant-led wedding is written specifically for each couple and can include personal stories, custom vows, symbolic rituals and meaningful family involvement.

What does a wedding celebrant do?

A wedding celebrant works closely with you to design, write and deliver your wedding ceremony. This includes learning about your relationship, helping with vows, creating a bespoke ceremony script and conducting the ceremony on your wedding day.

What is a celebrant-led wedding?

A celebrant-led wedding is a personalised wedding ceremony created entirely around the couple. Unlike a registrar ceremony, there are very few restrictions on wording, structure, location or content.

Why choose a celebrant instead of a registrar?

Many couples choose a celebrant because they want more flexibility and personalisation.

A celebrant can tell your story, include personal vows, involve family members and create a ceremony that reflects your relationship rather than following a standard script.

Are celebrant weddings becoming more popular?

Yes. Celebrant-led weddings are one of the fastest-growing wedding trends in the UK because couples increasingly want meaningful and personalised ceremonies.

Legal Marriage Questions

Can a celebrant legally marry us?

In England and Wales, celebrants currently cannot legally register your marriage.

Most couples choose to complete the legal paperwork separately at a registry office and then have their celebrant-led wedding ceremony on their chosen date.

Do we need a registrar as well as a celebrant?

If you want your marriage to be legally recognised, you'll need to complete the legal registration process separately.

Many couples choose a simple registry office appointment before or after their wedding day.

Is a celebrant wedding legally recognised?

The celebrant ceremony itself is not currently legally binding in England and Wales.

The legal registration takes place separately.

Why do couples still choose a celebrant if it isn't legally binding?

Because the celebrant ceremony becomes the meaningful wedding ceremony they actually want. Many couples see the legal registration as paperwork and the celebrant ceremony as their real wedding celebration.

Planning Your Ceremony

How far in advance should we book a celebrant?

Many couples book between 12 and 24 months before their wedding date, particularly for popular spring and summer weekends. If you have a specific date in mind, it is worth enquiring as early as possible.

How long does a celebrant wedding ceremony last?

Most ceremonies last between 30 and 45 minutes, although every ceremony is tailored to the couple. Some couples prefer shorter ceremonies, while others choose to include readings, music and symbolic rituals.

How many meetings do we have before the wedding?

This varies, but most couples enjoy:

  • An initial consultation

  • A discovery meeting

  • Ceremony review meetings

  • Ongoing support leading up to the wedding

Can we review the ceremony beforehand?

Yes. You'll receive a draft of your ceremony and have the opportunity to suggest amendments before the final version is completed.

Can we make changes close to the wedding day?

Absolutely. Wedding plans often evolve and your ceremony can evolve too.

Wedding Vows

Do we have to write our own vows?

No. Some couples write their own vows, while others prefer traditional wording.

There is no right or wrong approach.

Can you help us write our vows?

Yes. Many couples appreciate guidance and support when writing vows. I can provide examples, prompts and advice to help you find the right words.

Should our vows be romantic or funny?

Whatever feels natural. The best vows are authentic and reflect your personalities.

Many couples choose a combination of heartfelt promises and light-hearted humour.

Do we have to share our vows with each other beforehand?

Not at all. Some couples love the surprise of hearing them for the first time during the ceremony.

Ceremony Content

Can we include personal stories?

Absolutely. Personal storytelling is often one of the highlights of a celebrant-led wedding.

Can we include humour?

Yes. In fact, many guests enjoy ceremonies that balance emotion with genuine laughter.

Can we include cultural traditions?

Of course. Celebrant-led weddings are ideal for incorporating cultural, family and heritage traditions.

Can we include religious elements?

Yes. Whether you're religious, spiritual, non-religious or somewhere in between, your ceremony can reflect your beliefs and values.

Family Involvement

Can our children be involved?

Absolutely. Many couples include children through readings, symbolic rituals or family vows.

Can parents and grandparents participate?

Yes. Family members can perform readings, offer blessings or play meaningful roles throughout the ceremony.

Can we involve stepchildren?

Celebrant ceremonies are particularly effective for blended families because they allow important relationships to be recognised and celebrated.

Pets at Weddings

Can our dog be part of the ceremony?

Yes. Many couples include their dog as a ring bearer, flower dog or honorary guest.

Can other pets be included?

Where venue rules allow, yes. Your ceremony should reflect your family, and for many couples that includes pets.

Wedding Venues

Can a celebrant perform a ceremony at any venue?

One of the biggest benefits of celebrant weddings is flexibility.  You can hold your ceremony at a venue, private home, garden or outdoor location.

Do you work at wedding venues across Cheshire?

Yes. I regularly work at wedding venues throughout Cheshire and the North West.

Do you work in Manchester?

Absolutely. I conduct ceremonies throughout Manchester, Greater Manchester and surrounding areas.

Will you travel outside Cheshire and Manchester?

Yes. I regularly travel across the UK and internationally.

Destination Weddings

Can you conduct destination weddings abroad?

Yes. I have been fortunate to work with couples getting married overseas and would be delighted to discuss destination wedding plans.

How does a destination wedding ceremony work?

The process is very similar to a UK wedding, with planning meetings taking place online and final details arranged before travel.

Booking Questions

How much does a wedding celebrant cost?

Fees vary depending on location, ceremony requirements and travel. Please get in touch for a personalised quote.

Is a deposit required?

Typically, yes. A booking fee secures your date.

When is the final balance due?

This will be outlined within your booking agreement.

What happens if our wedding date changes?

Whenever possible, every effort will be made to accommodate date changes, subject to availability.
